Coaching Conflict – Profile & Norm

Coaching Conflict – Profile & Norm

This second lesson in the Coach to Master Conflict series shifts from understanding conflict to actively coaching it. You’ll learn how to help your team better understand their own conflict styles and set shared expectations for how to engage in disagreement.
These two steps—profiling and norming—are the foundation for building a culture of trust, candor, and ownership. Without them, teams either avoid conflict or handle it inconsistently. With them, you unlock the psychological readiness and practical habits needed for real dialogue.

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
  • Use the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument (TKI) to help your team identify and reflect on their default conflict styles.
  • Explain the strengths and risks of each conflict style and when each is appropriate.
  • Facilitate the creation of a Team Conflict Charter to establish shared conflict norms.
  • Adapt your coaching based on the maturity and trust level of your team.
